Last night, the State of Florida approved a $115.1 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year, including a $6.25 million allocation toward “restoring” the Ocklawaha River to its original state1. In practical terms, this would mean removing the historic Kirkpatrick Dam and draining the Rodman Reservoir entirely. As a world-renowned fishery, the Reservoir supports a diverse range of fish and wildlife. Its elimination would have devastating consequences for the ecosystem, local economy, and tourism industry alike.
Rodman Reservoir is a big bass destination for anglers from all over the world. It has produced more than 100 bass over 10 pounds submitted to Florida’s Trophy Catch program since 2013.
The Reservoir allows water coming from the Ocklawaha River to be filtered before it reaches the St. Johns River as well as serves as a means for flood control.
No matter how often you visit, your voice is essential in the fight to Save Rodman Reservoir. Only a veto from Governor Ron DeSantis can halt its removal. Make your voice count by urging him to use the power of the pen to preserve this vital resource.
